Rwanda has launched the world's first national drone delivery, new means of transportation expected to be used in delivering emergency medical supplies to remote parts of the country.
In a distance where an ambulance takes 4 hours to deliver blood, a drone will use 45 minutes-the longest period it can take to deliver blood. In February 2016, Rwanda government hired Zipline Inc- a California-based robotics firm to build the drone port in Shyogwe sector.
The facility will support Unmanned Aerial system (UAS) to ensure efficient logistical transportation of medical supplies to remote parts of Rwanda. Rwanda's President Paul Kagame said the launch of drones demonstrates Rwanda’s policy of making Information and Technology a key pillar for rapid development.
“We recognise its power to change lives, and contribute to the rapid socio-economic transformation we want.”
