Trump names Indian-American governor as UN envoy!
Washington: US president-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday tapped an second-generation Indian-American woman who serves as the governor of South Carolina to serve as his ambassador to the United Nations.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, 44, had been a prominent opponent of Trump during the Republican Party’s state-by-state primaries earlier this year and had offered only tepid support during his campaign against Hillary Clinton.
The naming of Haley, the first woman of Asian descent to lead a state, will add diversity to Trump’s team amid criticism that it has been so far dominated by older, white men and also points to his willingness to bring former critics into his administration.
“Governor Haley has a proven track record of bringing people together regardless of background or party affiliation to move critical policies forward for the betterment of her state and our country,” Trump said in a statement.
