- The father was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
The entire drama was played out at Joe Slovo township in Kwadwesi, near Port Elizabeth on South Africa's eastern cape coast.
The South African Police Service was deployed to ensure safety of the demolition team as 150 protesters started rioting hurling bricks and putting up road blockades with burning tyres, the report pointed out
Amid the melee, this man got up onto the roof of the house and threatened the demolishers that he would throw his child down if they didn't stop.
In a desperate bid to back them off, he threw the toddler off the shack, who fortunately landed on a cop's lap.
Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said: "Due to the dangerous threat to the safety of the child, police set out a plan to rescue the little girl and arrest the male and one of our officers successfully caught the girl as she was flung."
He added: "It is shocking that a father would attempt to sacrifice his own child for the sake of delaying the demolishing of an illegal shack structure but thankfully the girl was saved."
