HUAWEI Technologies, a Chinese multinational networking and telecommunications equipment and services company, has expressed its determination to continue working and investing in Tanzania.
The firm's Vice-President, Li JinGe, said recently at a meeting with President Jakaya Kikwete in Shenzhen, China that the company will continue working with the Tanzania government and other stakeholders to help boost and build capacity of the country's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector.
Huawei is third largest telecommunications equipment maker in the world headquartered in Shenzhen, Guangdong in southern China.
President Kikwete was recently on a six-day official visit of the Asian country At the meeting, the president urged Huawei Technologies to continue its investment on Tanzania's ICT sector to help in innovation and development of the industry.
"It has been a pleasure to visit Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen and discuss developments and reforms of the ICT industry in Tanzania.
"I look forward to building upon our relationship as Huawei continues to support the Tanzanian government in ICT as we work to reform the national company, Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL)," said President Kikwete.
Among the projects executed by Huawei Technologies in Tanzania is the construction of the National ICT Broadband Backbone, which is managed by TTCL.
The 200 million US dollars project through a loan from China involved rolling out 7,000- km of national fibre optic backbone in four rings -- north, south and west, plus metropolitaThe backbone provides a fibre-optic network, which is being managed and operated to provide high-speed broadband capability throughout the country at affordable prices.
The national backbone also connects with the international submarine cables (SEACOM and EASSy) in Dar es Salaam, and provides land connectivity to Tanzania's neighbours.
Huawei also supports operations of telecom companies including Vodacom, Airtel, Tigo and Zantel. The firm reportedly established in 1987 and at that time it focused on manufacturing phone switches, but has since expanded its business to include building telecommunications networks, providing operational and consulting services and equipment to enterprises inside and outside of China.
It is now involved in manufacturing of communications devices for the consumer market. Huawei has over 140,000 employees, around 46 per cent of whom are engaged in research and development.
