AVERINA Vitus (8), a standard two pupil at Chelameno Primary School in Nyamboge ward, Geita District was killed in an attack by a hungry crocodile when washing dishes on the shores of Lake Victoria.

Chelameno village chairman Mazura Luhibachi said the incident occurred on January 16, this year at around 10.30am when the girl was busy washing utensils and at that time she was sitting on a stone.

“She was not alone. She had with her friends at Mchungwani area on the lake shores, when the amphibian approached him,” a sister of the deceased said.

She added that the deceased shouted to ask for help after seeing their colleague is being attacked by the crocodile, but it was too late as the alligator had gone far.The deceased’s friends ran away into the village and informed village leaders and villagers stormed into the area to look for the body of the child but in vein.

People in the area however blamed wildlife officers for their failure to control the number of crocs, which has been a threat in recent days on the shores of the Lake Victoria.

They accuse the government of remaining complacent and even uncaring in the face of complaints arising from human-animal conflicts.

Responding, Geita District wildlife officer Msese Kabulizina, responded that people in the area have been delaying to inform responsible authorities when such incidents happens.

Crocodiles are the third-most dangerous predator in Africa after the hippos and the lion.

Crocodiles are large reptiles found in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia. They are members of the order Crocodilia, which also includes caimans, gharials and alligators. There are 13 species of crocodiles, so there are many different sizes of the same.
