Mr Ali Omar Juma, Secretary General of CHAUMA, introduced Mr Rashid before journalists and other party fans who gathered in the Association of People with Disabilities (UWZ) Hall, Welesi Kikwajuni.
“This is our Party’s presidential candidate for Zanzibar, we ask people on the Isles to support him if you want meaningful change,” Mr Juma said, naming Mr Hashim Rungwe Sipunda as the party nominee for Union presidency and Mr Issa Abbasi Hussein as the running mate.
He said the party which registered in 2012, has also picked 15 members for House of Representatives, 10 for councillors and 25 for union Parliament, saying they are prepared to win in the elections.Introducing himself, Mr Rashid, a businessman and a prominent football activist in the Isles, said he is prompted to vie for the top Zanzibar position, because he is not happy the way the Government of National Unity (GNU) has been dealing with social, political and economical challenges.
“If approved by ZEC and win elections, I will change Zanzibar in a short time because the available resources are enough. We only need honesty in revenue collection, creativeness, and good planning in expenditure,” said the presidential nominee.
He said CHAUMA is not interested in joining UKAWA as the alliance is not workable and even the current GNU is not for the Zanzibaris, “If I win, I will make sure it is a real GNU by incorporating all parties taking part in the forthcoming general elections.”
Other parties which have announced their Zanzibar presidential nominee are, CUF (Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad), CCM, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, AFP, Mr Said Soud, TADEA, Mr Juma Ali Khatib, ADC, Mr Hamad Rashid Mohamed and Jahazi-Asili, Mr Kassim Bakar Ali.
