Speaking to this paper yesterday, the Regional Police Commander, Ahmed Msangi, said the exercise was carried out late last week at the NMB bank Mbalizi Branch as part of the force’s bank robbery response training programme.
“It was a routine exercise for our force but it is also important for bank staff and the general public to learn the best response when a robbery occurs at a bank,” he said noting that the exercise was successfully and the bank’s officials were cooperative.
“No one was injured,” he said and added “...we want bank officials to be able to identify thieves quickly and to inform police much earlier.”
After the exercise police released the recorded video clip and circulated on social media to raise public awareness. In his part , NMB public relations officer Vicent Mnyanyika, allayed public concern saying their customers’ money remains safe and reassured the public that the exercise was conducted with permission from the bank.
Stakeholders say most bank robberies are carefully planned and tactfully executed by people with close links with bank staff.
