During his presidential campaign, Kenya’s head of state, William Ruto, ran on a bottom-up, made for hustlers narrative. If elected, his promises included cracking down on graft and other forms of corruption, establishing inquiries to end state capture, bringing an end to extrajudicial killings by the police, reining in on excessive borrowing practices and a host of other progressive policies. It was as if a new man was born, one who hadn’t serve as Deputy President in the previous government, which oversaw massive borrowing and looting.
Two years in office as president and has Ruto lived up to his promises? Well, for starters, a Cabinet Secretary implicated in selling farmers fake fertilizer was acquitted by parliament, even as the fate of his victims remains unknown. Police abductions of peaceful protesters has risen. Ruto’s government appears to function on an IMF life support machine, even as Kenyans are forced to pay through the nose for debt that hasn’t served them. In short, Ruto’s word is akin to a fox telling a crowd of sheep that he will become a vegetarian if they elect him.
