200 unregistered nursing colleges for closure

13th June 2013

Tanzania Nurses and Midwives Council (TNMC) has ordered individuals and institutions operating midwifery and nursing training without permanent registration to close down immediately.

Speaking to journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Registrar of Nursing and Midwifery colleges Lena Mfalila said there were about 200 colleges in the country operating illegally.

She said her council faced various challenges including mushrooming of colleges which operate without being registered by the council.

“The public must get quality and safe nursing and midwifery services,” she said.
She therefore ordered owners whose colleges were providing training without being accredited by the council to close down or face legal action.

Mfalila called on the college owners to follow procedures under TNMC to ensure their colleges get registration.

She said graduates from the colleges will neither be recognized by the council nor registered as nurses and midwives in the country and elsewhere in the world.

“I would like to call upon wananchi to stop enrolling their children at the colleges which are running in violation of he council’s regulations, otherwise your children will never be identified as nurses and midwifes,” she noted.

When reached for comments Health and Social Welfare Deputy Minister Dr Seif Rashid said his office was not aware of the 200 unregistered nursing and midwifery colleges in the country.

“We don’t have a record, but the TNMC has mandate to inspect and supervise nursing and midwifery profession. So what has been done by the council is one of its duties… the National Education Council of Tanzania (NACTE) is also among the inspectors of the colleges” he said.

TNMC is a body established to oversee nursing and midwifery regulations. The TNMC works with The Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in evolving standards for statutory nursing and midwifery regulation.
