Mice chew up $20,000 in ATM in India!

  • The ATM had been out of order for three weeks.
An ATM was invaded by mice that chomped on Rs12,38,000 lakh (s20,000) worth of currency notes in India.

The rodent intruders raided the ATM which had been out of order for nearly three weeks due to a technical glitch.

Police said the mice damaged currency notes worth Rs12,38,000, while notes worth Rs17,10,000 (s30,000) were left untouched in the cash dispenser belonging to the State Bank of India."On 14 June, when the ATM was opened for repair, technicians found shreds of currency notes of different denominations including many Rs2,000 and Rs500 notes.

"Some mice were also found inside the ATM. A formal complaint has been lodged with the police," a senior police official in Tinsukia told The Times of India.

Confirming the incident, SBI officials said they are looking into the matter for repairing the ATM which was run by a Guwahati-based financial company.

Police washed their hands of the incident, saying: "Had it been a case of miscreants sabotaging the ATM machines and damaging the currency notes, we would definitely have a role to play. But in this case, it's the mice that played foul."
