Flying out of Dubai? Here's what happens to your bags after you check them in!

  • Khaleej Times goes behind the scenes to show Dubai International's massive baggage handling system - one of the largest in the world.
Dubai International (DXB) has been ranked as the world's number one airport for international passengers for the fourth consecutive year, according to a traffic report issued by Airports Council International.

Average monthly traffic volumes have remained high in 2018 at 7.4 million passengers. The airport handled 52,770,675 bags in 2017, a five per cent increase from 50,271,040 bags in 2016. In the first six months of 2018 alone, the airport handled 26,228,297 bags. This is a huge increase compared to 42,035,841 bags handled by the Dubai International in 2014.

Ever wondered how the airport handles such a massive volume of bags every day? Khaleej Times went behind the scenes to explore the baggage handling system at Terminal 3. With a capacity of handling 15,000 per hour, the baggage handling system is one of the largest in the world. The system is 140km long, almost the distance from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

John Dyett, Head of Baggage Operations, Dubai Airports, said "Here in Terminal 3, we handle approximately about 110,000 bags every single day. During our busy five-hour peak time, we handle about 45,000 bags. In a single hour, we handle up to 13,000 bags. In Terminal 1, we handle 30,000 to 32,000 bags every day and in Terminal 2, we handle up to 28,000 bags every day."
