 By The guardian reporter

2nd January 2013
Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA)
The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has announced lower prices for petroleum products for the Tanzania Mainland market that come into effect today.

The price for petrol has decreased by 126/- per litre or 5.96%. Diesel is down too but by a much smaller margin of 32/- per litre or 1.60% while kerosene is down by 50/- per litre or 2.5%.

The wholesale prices for the three fuels have also decreased, that of petrol going down by 126/10 per litre or 6.17%, while diesel decreased by 32/48 or 1.69% and kerosene by 50/74 per litre or 2.6%.

Retail price for petrol in Dar es Salaam will now be 1,993/-, diesel 1,967/- and kerosene 1,973/- while the wholesale price for petrol will be 1,918/60; diesel 1892/97 and kerosene 1898/62.The statement explained that the change of petroleum product prices is in accordance with and response to the world market decrease of prices but also due to a slight appreciation of the Tanzanian Shilling.

It noted that in line with the prevailing sector legislation, prices of petroleum products are governed by rules of supply and demand. EWURA promised to continue encouraging competition in the sector and avail petroleum product prices including caps to keep consumers informed so that they are not inclined to pay higher prices.

“This information on prices is intended to enable stakeholders make informed decisions on petroleum prices at any given time…” the statement asserted.

Nonetheless he reminded customers and suppliers alike that Oil marketing companies are free to sell their products at prices that give them competitive advantages but this if and only if, such price does not exceed the price caps for the product in question.
The new approved formula was gazetted through Government Notice No. 454 of 23rd December 2011.

“It is an offence not to have prices published on clearly visible boards in front of the petrol stations…” the authority warns via the statement and asserting that any who do not adhere to the regulations and codes then “…they attract punitive measures.

As such all petrol stations are to publish petroleum product prices on clearly visible boards away from any obstructions. The prices are to clearly show prices, discounts offered as well as any trade incentives or promotions.
