The situation was not helped when police, who are not known for their restraint, fired generous amounts of tear gas into panicky crowds at the ferry terminal. Interestingly, the students who behaved like thugs were on their way to Kigamboni to protest against insecurity at and around the IFM hostels located across the creek. The students had every right to air their concerns about the recent wave of thefts and muggings at the hostels, but they should have done so in a peaceful and civilised manner that befits their status as educated people. There is no denying the fact that some parts of Kigamboni have been taken over by criminals, with the police doing precious little to make the area safe again for law-abiding citizens and their property, but this should not be an excuse for victims to break the law in their quest to get their message through to the relevant authorities. |
