President Jakaya Kikwete has directed Higher Education Students’ Loans Board to ensure that graduates benefitting from government’s loans repay the money so as to enable other Tanzanians to go for tertiary education.
He issued the directives here yesterday while addressing students and leaders of the Muslim University in Morogoro. This was after he laid the foundation stone at the Information and Communication Technology building and opened the building for the faculty of Social Sciences.
The President’s directives came after the MUM Vice Chancellor Prof Hamza Njozi told the President that the varsity had failed to enroll many entrants for the 2012/2013 academic year because aspiring students have failed to secure loans.
In his explanations Prof Njozi said that MUM registered 1829 students but only managed to get 477. At 1048 students missed their chance to join the varsity due to failure to access loans from HESLB.
President Kikwete however said that it was the government intention to ensure that all students who applied for higher education get enrollment but the plans have not been very successful due to limited budget.
In 2005, for example, he said, the board issued 56.1bn/- in loans to 16,345 students, adding that the amount has been increasing and in the academic year 2013/2014, HESLB will obliged to dish out 345bn/- in loan to 98,772 students.
“The government will continue to increase the budget for higher education so that in future all students who go for tertiary education can get loans,” the President said.
