Some 11,600 tonnes of rice and wheat flour have been imported through Malindi into Zanzibar with tax-exemption granted by the Minister of State in President’s Office responsible for Finance and Economic Affairs, Mwinyihaji Makame Mwadini.
The value of the foodstuffs imported stood at Sh 570 million.
The Guardian on Sunday investigation has revealed that MV. RYU GYONG from Vietnam last week transported 11,000 tonnes of rice to Zanzibar.
Two large-scale businessmen are said to have imported the cargo using two companies registered in Zanzibar – Bombay Bazaar owned by Abdulsatar Daudi and Yasser Provision Store owned by Said Nasser Bopar The rice -Vietnam long grain type – packed in sachets of 50 kilogrammes is already being sold in the Zanzibar market.
The 600 tonne Sh103million wheat flour ferried to the Isles two weeks ago by Turkey based MV. KAILAS was imported by Bombay Bazaar Company.
Turkey’s BAFRA ERIS UN YEM GIDA SAN. VE TIC is said to have transported the cargo. It is estimated that the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) would fetch between $120 and $600 for each tonne of wheat flour.
On July 23 this year the minister granted the tax exemption for rice cargo that is expected to last until October 9 while the exemption for the wheat flour was given on Monday this week. The tax-exemption for rice and wheat flour became effective on July 9 and June 23 respectively. “Normally the Zanzibar government reduces tax on foodstuffs during Ramadan to enable the public to access foodstuffs at affordable prices, said Minister Makame in his letter to the Deputy TRA Commissioner in Zanzibar Hassan Mcha.
