Zanzibar — THE development of technology and innovation in Zanzibar is largely hampered by deride, lack of assessment and lack of policy, government leaders said on Thursday at the Smart Partnership Dialogue workshop help here on Thursday.
When asked to mention challenges facing the growth of technology and innovation in the islands, leaders including regional commissioners, district commissioners and directors from the government institutions also cited lack of knowledge and commitment as other hitches in development.
"If we want to move ahead in technology and innovation, we should remove all these obstacles and improve education, motivate people with talents, have policy in-place and tax free on goods used in developing technology," they suggested.
In his speech to officiate the opening of 'Smart Partnership Dialogue (SPD) workshop, which drew participants from media, NGOs, politicians, academicians, and police, the Unguja South Regional Commissioner Mr Idrissa Muslim Hija emphasized on the need for the government to work with other stakeholders in promoting innovation.
Presenting their opinion on how Smart Partnership Dialogue could be implemented in the islands, other participants asked the government to establish funds to promote talented youths and encourage people to value goods processed in the country.
Dr Mafunda Dugushilu, director of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Competitiveness - The Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), said "our country can never develop without technology and creativeness."
He said his commission is committed to support people who are innovative and that the number of people particularly innovative young Tanzanians have been growing, an indication of promising future in technology.
