The European Union on Friday (May 10th) pledged 19 billion shillings ($11.7 million) to support Zanzibari non-state actors and the sugar sector, Tanzania's Daily News reported.
About 13 billion shillings ($8 million) will go towards supporting the EU Accompanying Measures programme, which assists Tanzanian sugar exporters in complying with EU commodity standards.
The funds will help improve infrastructure including feeder roads, block farming and irrigation, as well as support education to strengthen the technical, financial and environmental management capacities of small-scale sugar producers. More than 15,000 sugar contract farmers are expected to benefit from the funds.
The rest of the money will help organisations and civil society programmes in Zanzibar to strengthen accountability, participatory development, good governance and policy advocacy.
"As we launch today a new set of meaningful and targeted activities in support of good governance and sustainable growth, we also meet to charter together a new development path for the future, a clear course that will enable us to get more impact and better results in support of Tanzania's poverty reduction and sustainable development efforts," said Ambassador Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi, head of the European Union Delegation to Tanzania and the East African Community.
Sebregondi signed the assistance agreement in Dar es Salaam with Tanzania's Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs William Mgimwa.
