Zanzibar — INSUFFICIENT funds to support higher education has remained a big challenge in many developing countries including Tanzania, President Ali Mohamed Shein said here at the official opening of the 'Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy (MNMA) campus in Zanzibar.
"More Higher Learning Institutions have been opening in the country, but our problem is supporting the development of the colleges and students. However, the government will spare no efforts to support the MNMA," said Dr Shein in speech at the short ceremony to open the campus at Bububu area.
He thanked the Academy's board to establish the MNMA branch in Zanzibar, appealing to the management to make sure that both Zanzibaris and the people from the Mainland got opportunities in enrolment and employment.
Dr Shein said that Tanzanians are proud to have the college, as many youths are studying in the college established by an Act of Parliament No 6 of 2005. The MNMA took over functions, assets and liabilities of the former "Kivukoni Academy of Social Science Sciences (KASS)'.
The MNMA Principal, Dr John Magotti, informed the gathering that the Zanzibar campus now with about 150 students, started operating in 2011, faces shortage lecture rooms, libraries, hostels and "applications for job opportunities mainly teaching from Zanzibaris are very low."
The opening of the MNMA campus in Zanzibar was also witnessed by the First Vice president Mr Seif Sharif Hamad, the academy board chairman Dr Salim Ahmed Salim, Zanzibar Minister for Education and Vocational training Mr Ali Juma Shamuhuna, and other dignitaries.
