MUSCAT — A vascular surgery team at the Royal Hospital successfully performed a rare surgery on a 2-year and nine months old child suffering from abdominal aortic aneurysm.
A team led by Dr Sulaiman al Shamsi, Senior Consultant, carried out the surgery to connect the abdominal aorta to the right and left pelvic arteries using prosthetic artery. The successful operation took about four hours.
It is worth mentioning that abdominal aortic aneurysms are very common among elderly patients suffering from diabetes, hypertension and cholesterolemia. It is very rare among children to the extent that only four cases have been registered all over the world. — ONA
