Botswana opens consulate, appoints honorary consul in Dar

BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER

28th November 2013.

Bernard Membe (centre), Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation officiates the opening of the Consulate of the Republic of Botswana in Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania is being called on to tighten ties with Botswana especially in the business and investment arenas as the two strengthen relations evident in the fact that, while one needs visas (issued at the border) to enter neighbouring countries like Kenya and Uganda there is no visa required for a Tanzanian to enter Botswana.

The call was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Bernard Membe during the launching of Botswana Consulate Office in Dar es Salaam yesterday.
The inauguration of the office is in time to house its residence Botswana appointed long serving public servant and renowned investment expert, Eng. Emmanuel Ole Naiko who is now the honorary consul of the Republic of Botswana to the United Republic of Tanzania with residence in Dar es Salaam.

Membe said the launching of the consulate office signifies the growing relations that exist between the two countries since the 1960s by the founding leaders of both nations. He noted that the consulate will go along way in strengthening the relations between the two countries.

The newly appointed attaché pledged to do whatever it takes to promote cordial business relations between Tanzania and Botswana. He noted that there are things that can best be done by Botswana on one hand and while there are others that can best done by Tanzania on the other hand.

As an example he spoke of the fact that Botswana has moved from being a raw diamond producer to an exporter of cut and processed diamonds a move that Tanzania will do well to emulate for its vast gem stone resource base.

“Tanzania can learn from Botswana what it takes to move to the stage of value addition in minerals, an action which can quickly be applied to process raw agricultural products,” he noted.

“Together, in smart partnership, each doing what they are best at, our countries will move forward and find ways to narrow the poverty gap,” he added.

He said he shall advocate for both countries to actively facilitate private investment through transfer of skills, technology, incentives and investment guarantees and see how both countries can each address the supply constrain side like infrastructure and human capital.

The High Commissioner of Botswana to Tanzania, Amb. Tuelonyana Oliphant said Botswana and Tanzania’s bilateral relations continue to grow, galvanized by their common ideals of good governance, democracy and the rule of law.

“It is our ardent hope and expectation that with the opening of the office of the honorary consul general in Tanzania, the relations between the two countries can only gain strength and momentum,” she said.
