Daunting task for Zanzibar Heroes

By Mohammed Ugasa

Zanzibar Heroes
Despite pulling a deserving 2-1 victory over South Sudan during their opening match of this year’s CECAFA Challenge Cup championship in Nairobi on Wednesday, Zanzibar Heroes has an uphill task to win quarterfinal progression.

Grouped with hosts Kenya and the most improved side in the East Africa, Ethiopia, Zanzibar would most likely experience torrid moment to sail through the group stage despite needing just a point to cruise into the last eight.

The fact that hosts Kenya, who lost last edition’s final to Uganda in Kampala, have salvaged just a point during their opening match against Ethiopia played at the Nyayo Stadium last Wednesday, it has already transformed the Group A as a tough one.

The Heroes would need to stage a superb performance to either shake off the Kenyans and Ethiopians or play it safe to secure draw in either of their day two matches tomorrow.

Two top-placed teams in each of the three groups would qualify into the last eight and two other third best placed teams will too join the quarterfinals fray. All quarterfinals will be played in Kisumu while semis will be played in Mombasa next week.
