The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a Dh500 million contract to elevate the Shaikh Zayed Road above the course of the Dubai Water Canal and modify the road path. The board of directors of the RTA endorsed the award of contract for Phase I of Bridges and Roads Network of the Dubai Water Canal project, which will be carried out in three phases.
The RTA is tasked with the design and construction work of the project up to the completion of the final phase linking the Dubai Creek with the Arabian Gulf. This will be done by extending the canal to pass under the Shaikh Zayed Road, and across Al Safa Park, Jumeirah 2 and continue up to the Arabian Gulf near the southern part of the Jumeirah Beach Park.
Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA said Phase I of the project was awarded to the Turkish Jonal Company, comprising construction of a bridge across the Shaikh Zayed Road passing above the waterway enabling free navigation round the clock.
“An 800-metre long sector of the Shaikh Zayed Road will be impacted by the project which also includes the shifting of the existing utility lines impacted by the course of the canal, as well as undertaking lighting and water fountain works on the bridge,” Al Tayer said.
The first and second contracts of the Dubai Water Canal project include the construction of bridges over the main roads intercepting the canal: the Shaikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Road.
He said the bridges will rise 8.5 metres above water level. The project works also include shifting the utility lines via conduits passing underneath the canal, besides constructing a multi-tier interchange above Al Wasl Road providing free access and smooth traffic movement at Al Hadiqa Road and Al Athar Road upon completion of the project.
Al Tayer said the RTA has mapped out a comprehensive plan to ensure a smooth traffic movement. The temporary traffic diversion will conform to specifications of the permanent roads in terms of engineering design, levelling of the surface and the asphalt, and the provision of sufficient lighting to ensure the safety of all road users.
During the diversion stage, the same number of existing lanes will be maintained in order to avoid any negative repercussions on the current traffic volumes and avert any potential additional congestions or delays as a result of the construction work.

The contractor’s work site will be fully separated with high barriers to suppress the amount of noise or inconvenience to road users as well as residents of the neighbourhood.
