South African Neville Cory carded a staggering eleven under par net 61 to emerge victorious in this year’s edition of Waitara Golf championship that was staged at the Lugalo Golf Club last Saturday but it was former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi who stole the show.

While Cory waited for computations to determine the winner inside the club house, the guest of honour Mwinyi attracted a huge crowd at the 18th green as he putted to herald end of the tourney later in the evening.

The former President eased with a putter to sink a three-foot putt as huge crowd of golfers and other onlookers mobbed him at the 18th green.

Dressed in yellow T-shirt, the former President looked elegant as he gently held the putter before pushing the ball with intricacy of a regular golfer.
Fans and other golfers erupted in jubilation as they cheered the action unexpected from the former President.

The winner Cory completely made a mockery of his 18 handicap when he grossed seven over par 79 gross.

He reached the turn at six over par 40 sinking a birdie at the par three third to polish his outward score with additional three pars. He sank the only birdie at the par four 15th and the other par at the par three penultimate hole and the rest were avalanche of bogies.

His worst ever score during the day that otherwise stained his good run was at the par four 14 where he holed out for ten. Otherwise his three over par 39 inward score gave him an edge to win the prestigious amateur tournament for the season.

Otherwise, nine handicapper Mohabe Nyirabu from Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club made his presence felt during the day to win the seniors category of players when he burned the Lugalo greens with one over par 73 net score to edge out Charles Sanga on count back. J. M Mokwe finished third falling three shots adrift of the category’s runners-up Sanga.

Nyirabu who is back into the game to shrug off a disappointment caused by an accident at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club that claimed life of his otherwise the best golf partner, the late Christant Kamuzora in 2011, grossed ten over par 82.

Nyirabu reached the turn at eight over par 44 having parred thrice. He resumed the back nine with flourish to sink magnificent birdie at the par four twelve decorated by four other pars in his entire back nine display.

Another DGC player Gregory Nikitas won the division A top award on level par net 72 strokes to condemn Abdallah Yusuf and Idd Mzaki on count back computations.

Ladies winner was none other than 19 handicapper Amina Khamis who returned 71 net to edge out Sophia Mathias by three strokes margin as Sara Dennis was third placed on 80 net.

Another mouth-wattering contest was in division B category as Shaaban Kibuna had to beat Hitesh Valambia on 71 net counts back as eleven handicapper towering Foti Gwebe came third trailing the winner by a shot.

Division C winner was Nico Chitawa on 76 net strokes count back to second placed Prosper Mandaya. Veteran golfer Alfred Kinswaga now playing at unusual 19 handicaps was three shots adrift of the division winner.

The day-long tourney had attracted over hundred golfers and kindly sponsored by Serengeti Breweries through Johnnie Walker brand.

The SBL’s director of Marketing Ephraim Mafuru thanked all participants who turned out to compete at the annual tournament. SBL has continued its sponsorship stranglehold for the golf tourney for several years now.

The tournament is annually staged in honour of retired army General George Waitara who took the trouble of constructing the course over eight years ago. Waitara featured in the tournament last Saturday.

The hole number 19 continued to host players till close to midnight.
