Zanzibar Police in Hot Pursuit of Hotel Robbers

BY ISSA YUSSUF, 5 NOVEMBER 2013

Zanzibar — POLICE in Zanzibar have launched a manhunt for three suspected bandits in connection with an armed robbery that occurred on Saturday at a tourist's hotel named 'Villa Lodge,' Matemwe coastal village, north of Unguja Islands.
According to North Unguja region acting police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Ms Salma Khamis, police are searching for the suspects who managed to escape after the midnight robbery, injuring two hotel guards.
"One of the hotel guards named Haji Juma was seriously injured after being shot in the leg and he is still being treated at the Mnazi Mmoja main hospital. The other guard was also injured, but has been discharged from hospital," said ACP Khamis.
She said that the robbers, who are thought to have arrived at the hotel by a boat, blocked the entrance into the hotel owned by a foreigner and stole a wall clock, camera and 600,000/- in cash. "After going through the hotel manager's office, they managed to get the cash and disappeared," said the police spokesperson.
The incident was the latest robbery with repeated calls to the government to spare no effort in combating robbery which scares away tourists. "We continue to appeal to members of the public to help in the search by providing information and the business community to desist from keeping or moving around with large sums of money to avoid losing their cash," the ACP Khamis said
