Other notable achievements that the Isles government has registered include ensuring that people don’t travel for more than five kilometers searching for healthcare services.
World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that people should not travel for more than five kilometers in search of healthcare services.
Speaking during the inauguration of a hospital for the anti smuggling force (Kikosi Maalum cha Kupambana na Magendo (KMKM) at Kibweni area on Saturday - as part of the 50th anniversary of the revolutionary government of Zanzibar due on January 12 this year, Kikwete said Zanzibar needs to maintain her efforts in ensuring that there is zero malaria death or else it will go back to where it used to be.
“To completely eliminate deaths resulting from malaria… this has never happened in any African country but here in Zanzibar it has happened, and to speak the truth if it were not for international procedures, the Isles would have announced scrapping of malaria,” said the President.
“We might find ourselves going back to where we used to be if we don’t maintain the efforts. What I want is that we maintain this impeccable achievement and not allow ourselves to go back to where we came from,” said the President.
According to Health and Social Welfare Minister for Zanzibar, Juma Duni Haji, in 2007 malaria related deaths were perched at 3.1 percent while in 2011 the deaths went to less than one percent.
“However, in 2004/5 malaria related deaths were perched at 44.6 percent but went down to less than one percent in 2012,” said the minister.
President Kikwete also applauded Zanzibar for having managed to ensure that her people do not travel for more than five kilometres in search of medical care as per WHO guidelines.
“I am proud to commend you President (Zanzibar’s President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein) for having managed to reach the goal. No one travels for more than three kilometres from one health centre to another,” noted Kikwete in a statement reached the media yesterday.
President Kikwete applauded the development insisting that the success registered in the health sector and other sectors is unopposed truth for the revolution that took place on January 12, 1964.
Kikwete also commended the anti smuggling force for the job well done in ensuring security of boarders in the ocean and for maintaining peace and tranquility that Tanzania has witnessed within the 50 years of the revolution of Zanzibar.
