Tanzania's best science students to fly to Ireland

8th January 2014

Karimjee Jivanjee Foundation Chairman, Mr Hatim Karimjee, shakes hands with Ilongero Sec School student, Fidel Samwel who became overall winner of 2013 Young Scientists Tanzania (YST) Award.
Irish Aid in collaboration with Karimjee Jivanjee Foundation (KJF) have sponsored four students from Ilongero and Fidel Castro secondary schools in Singida and Pemba respectively to go to Dublin, Ireland as a reward of being overall winners of the Young Scientists Tanzania Award (YST) in 2013.

Speaking to the invited dignitaries during the official scholarship award and the students’ farewell ceremony yesterday in Dar es Salaam, KJF Chairman Hatim Karimjee said the two students, Jafari Ndagula from Ilongelo and Fidel Samwel from Fidel Castro secondary school won the overall prize at YST 2013 exhibition with their presentation on a drip irrigation system using recycled materials.

“The winners received cash prizes, medals, trophies, laptops and a visit to Dublin, Ireland to represent Tanzanian students in the Irish based Young Scientists award ceremony,” he said.

“The winners also received scholarships from the Karimjee Jivanjee Foundation for their graduate studies in the future as part of the foundation’s efforts to support social and economic development in the country,” he said.

Karimjee said YST also rewarded two students, Muslih Othman Khamis and Amne Said from Fidel Castro secondary school for their project on ethanol biofuel plant in Pemba. The KJF awarded scholarships to both students.

Karimjee added that the foundation is a strong supporter of YST because they aim to enhance education in science and technology to transform Tanzania and improve the learning environment throughout the country.

“KJF has been supporting YST since 2012 by being the major sponsor to the Technology Award and in 2013 KJF increased its support to YST by providing scholarships to overall winners and to those most in need,” he added.

For her part, Assistant Director in the ministry of Education and Vocational Training Commissioner’s Office, Hadija Mcheka said the government fully supports the initiative established by YST because it will promote and encourage students to pursue science subjects in the country.

“This programme will promote critical thinking and creativity among students and give the students a platform to come together, share knowledge and experience,” she said.

YST Director, Dr Gosbert Kamugisha said they decided to come up with the initiative after noticing that performances in science subjects in Form Four and Six examinations were declining year by year.

“YST is a programme sponsored by Irish Aid and it is a platform for young secondary school students to come together to investigate theories, discover new technologies and advance science education through research and innovation,” he said.

“In practice, the programme will nurture young scientists from an early stage and educate the general public of the importance of science in daily life and economic development,” he said.

He added that KJF provides funds to enhance education in Tanzania by providing scholarships to Tanzanians to study at graduate and post graduate levels mainly in Tanzania.
