Tanzania Football Federation TFF has entered the race to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations AFCON finals 2007 following withdrawal from Libya as the host nation Goal can exclusively reveal.
TFF Executive Committee under President Jamali Malinzi met on the weekend and agreed to bid to host the finals, and if successful it will be the first time Tanzania gets to host the continent’s most prestigious football event.
"We know that one of the conditions for preparing the final includes the country having hosted a youth tournament in the past. But since this issue lies in special circumstances, we believe CAF will think of our request, "said Malinzi to Goal.
Goal exclusively revealed on Monday that Kenya had joined the race to host the finals, after A statement from Kenya FA signed by President Sam Nyamweya and obtained by Goal stated in part, “Football Kenya Federation wishes to announce Kenya’s interest in putting in a bid to host 2017 Orange CAF Africa Cup of Nations, which opened following withdrawal of Libya as host nation.
Libya withdrew after a delegation from country's Ministry of Youth and Sports that included the President of Libyan Football Federation revealed in a meeting with Caf President Issa Hayatou that owing to the unstable security situation in the country, they would not be able to host Afcon in 2017.
Consequently, Secretary General of Caf, Hicham El Amrani, dispatched a circular on August 23, 2014, to all 54 member associations informing them of the decision and opening bids for hosting of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
