Zanzibar Youths 'Lack Creativity, Innovation'

DESPITE the ongoing efforts by the government to provide vocational training and skills to youths in colleges, many graduates still remain unemployed and inactive.
"It is disappointing that youths lack creativity and innovation to self employment; instead, they stay idle to wait for government employment," said Mr Mussa Ali Makame, the Administrative Officer at State University of Zanzibar (SUZA).
He was addressing students at a workshop held at the Institute of Public Administration (IPA) in the Isles. He added that both the government and private sector have been supporting vocational training and creativity in a bid to encourage self employment.
Makame said, "It is quite surprising and bad news that many youths still remain idle and cannot use the skills and knowledge they have acquired.
Youths continue to be dependent upon parents and the state."
He added that some youths dream of a better life; want to own expensive things without working. Some opt to wait for government employment for any period of time.
"The best way to overcome the unemployment burden is by youths to be innovative, creative, and hardworking after college," the students were advised.
Makame warned that staying idle drives youths to unacceptable behaviours like theft, use of drugs, and engaging in commercial sex. About 60 students met with facilitators from Kenya, Tanzania mainland, and host Zanzibar at IPA to learn about administrative principles, management of Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCOS), and life-skills.
