BG Tanzania Eyes Investment in Liquefied Natural Gas

PROCESSING of gas into liquefied natural gas for the domestic market and exports is the next step of investment which BG Tanzania and its partners will pursue within the next few years.
BG East Africa President Derek Hudson said BG Group, the holding company of BG Tanzania and its partners have made an encouraging start on what is a complex undertaking potentially involving billions of dollars of investment to develop Tanzania's offshore gas resources.
"To date we have invested more than 1.5 billion US dollars, drilled 15 successful exploration and appraisal wells and identified total recoverable gas resources around 15 trillion cubic feet, enough to support a two-train LNG project," Mr Hudson said.
Hudson said BG Group and its partners are making good progress with engineering, design and impact management assessment which will inform a final decision whether to proceed with a major gas project anchored in the south of the country.
"Onshore, we have a joint venture agreement with the partners in Block 2, Statoil and ExxonMobil, to progress initial engineering work and have a memorandum of understanding with the government of Tanzania setting out the process to acquire a site for a potential LNG facility," he noted.
Currently, BG is investing in education and training initiatives to boost the employment prospects of local people and on programmes to improve the health and safety of the communities in which we operate.
"We are keen to make this new gas industry work for all of Tanzania," Mr Hudson said. BG Group has a 60 per cent interest in, and is operator of, Blocks 1, 3 and 4 offshore Tanzania, with Ophir Energy holding 20 per cent and Pavilion Energy also holding 20 per cent.
Meanwhile, GB Tanzania has expressed its plans to award 20 more postgraduate scholarships in Oil and Gas for the 2015/16 and 2016/-17 academic years.
This follows the company's recent move to grant scholarships to 10 Tanzania students to pursue Master studies in Oil and Gas for engineering and geology studies at two UK universities of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon. Since its first award in 2012, the BG Tanzania has bestowed four scholarships for the two academic years of 2012/13 and 2013/14.
The scheme is funded by BG Tanzania and administered by the British Council, Tanzania. It offers Tanzanian graduates the opportunity to pursue postgraduate education at universities in the UK with focus on specific geoscience and engineering courses that are particularly relevant for Tanzania's emerging natural gas and related sectors.
