Recovering JK calls top leaders

Dar es Salaam. President Jakaya Kikwete on Monday spoke to senior Tanzanian leaders for the first time since he was operated on in the US on Saturday.
The President, who is still admitted to the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, spoke by telephone with Vice President Mohammed Gharib Bilal, Zanzibar President Ali Mohammed Shein and Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda, according to a State House statement.
The statement also said that President Kikwete had since Monday been responding to hundreds of text messages from people who wished him a quick recovery and good health since his prostate surgery was announced last weekend.
In another development, doctors treating the President removed the bandage that covered the incision and said he was making good recovery.
President Kikwete underwent a successful operation on in the US on Saturday, State House announced yesterday.
Mr Kikwete left the country on Thursday evening for what his aides said was a routine medical check-up.
