IN SUMMARY
  • President Kikwete, who underwent prostate surgery last weekend, will be closely monitored by doctors and will continue  to receive treatment while at the hotel that is associated with the hospital
Dar es Salaam. President Jakaya Kikwete was on Wednesday transferred from the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the US to a nearby hotel.
The President left the hospital where he underwent a  successful prostate surgery last weekend to the special hotel for recuperating VIPs. The facility, according to a statement sent to newsrooms yesterday, is located near the hospital.
President Kikwete will be closely monitored by doctors and will continue  to receive treatment while at the hotel that is associated with the hospital.
Dressed in a stripped T-shirt and a long black coat, the President looked jovial as he left the hospital. He was in the company of his medical team, aides and some family members, including his wife, Salma. He shook hands with the lead doctor outside the hospital before driving away in a black limousine.
The statement from the Directorate of Presidential Communications said since Saturday when the surgery was performed, the President had been responding well to treatment. It added that Mr Kikwete was walking as part of his therapeutic  treatment.
The bandage on him has been removed and the incision is healing, according to the officials.
Doctors at Johns Hopkins Hospital will review the next course of his treatment after a week of observation. The Head of State was earlier expected to be in the US for 10 days.
Meanwhile, following a flood of messages the President continues to receive from well-wishers, he was given another phone number in the US for that particular use.
His aides circulated the number; (+1-646-309-2295), for the public to use to communicate with their leader. On Tuesday, President Kikwete had his first telephone conversation with other government leaders back home.
