Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB)
Anti corruption body in Simiyu has said it is investigating corruption allegations at the Bariadi District Hospital where it is reported that doctors and nurses solicit bribes from patients with impunity.

Speaking to press over the weekend in the region, Simiyu Regional Chief for Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) Joseph John said the bureau has discovered that patients are asked to pay 3000/- to 5000/- to doctors and nurses before getting any services.

John who was speaking during the climax of international anti corruption day said according to PCCB’s investigation in Simiyu Region, nurses are taking a lead in solicitating bribes from patients and relatives of people admitted to the hospital.

“A study done last year to asses corruption practices in the hospital indicated that nurses were the most corrupt followed by doctors and people in the casuality desk,” he said.

He said the study involved wananchi, hospital workers, political leaders, religious leaders and the patients. “Most of the people interviewed during the study accused nurses of soliciting bribes and using abusive language to patients and especially expecting mothers,” he said.

John said according to the study, doctors ask 5000/- from patients and relatives of people admitted to the hospital while staff working at the causality demand 2000/-.

He said the bureau have also discovered mismanagement of public funds at the hospital by senior officers manning the hospital.

John said during interview with the workers, some cited nepotism and favouritism from their leaders.

He said the workers said some of the leaders favour few staff to attend training and seminars.
