Power restored in Sharjah after fire leads to blackout

Web Report / 7 December 2014

The area was cordoned off and the Sharjah Civil Defence deployed firefighters to control the fire.

Fire in Sharjah power station
Residents in Al Nahda, Sharjah, heaved a sigh of relief as power was restored in the area following a blackout due to fire at a power station.
The power outage took place at 9.30 am after fire broke out at a power station behind Taawun Mall.
While Sewa officials confirmed the fire, the extent of the damage was not known.
Surfers on their way to work sent in pictures of the incident, while some even reported flickering of electrical appliances in their houses when the incident took place.
“Thick black smoke could be seen billowing out from the scene. Firefighters and police were at the scene,” Fatima Suhail, a surfer, told Khaleej Times. “Thankfully, we have not faced power cuts.”
Mohammed, another surfer who lives in the area, spoke of heavy traffic in the area.
“Acrid smell filled the whole area. Traffic movement had been reduced to a crawl and people could be seen standing in balconies and out on the roads,” he said.
'We are facing power outage since 9.30 am in the morning. It caused lot of problems to us,' said Asma, a housewife residing in Al Nahda area.
Asiya, another resident in the same area, said she arrived in the building after dropping her children to school and found that elevators were not working due to power failure.
'It's an uphill task to go by stairs and reach my apartment on the 18th floor,' she said.
Shahid Hussain, a building watchman in Al Nahda Park, said all electricity equipment was down due to electricity failure.
