By Mwinyi Sadallah, The Citizen Correspondent

IN SUMMARY

Zanzibar. Opposition parties here are planning a special campaign to sensitize the people to reject the Prime Minister, Mr Mizengo Pinda, and force him to resign in the wake of the Tegeta Escrow account scandal.
Opposition politicians told this paper that they were waiting to see what moves Mr Pinda would take after the Parliament passed a resolution seeking stern punitive measures against several politicians, executives as well as an investor.
Those recommended for annulment of their appointments are senior civil servants, including cabinet ministers.
Politicians from the CUF, Tadea and NCCR-Mageuzi said their move aims at entrenching the spirit of accountability among public leaders. They said, though Mr Pinda was not directly linked to the scandal, it was lethargy on the part of his office which saw billions of tax payer’s money stolen by few individuals from the Bank of Tanzania (BoT).
The CUF director of public communications, Mr Salim Bimani Abdalla said if it were not for the Prime Minister’s office weakness, there was no way few individuals would have been able to facilitate the plot. He said it was amazing why Pinda should remain in office while such big amount of money is stolen by few individuals including some from the government.
“We will go across the country asking the people to reject Pinda. There is no point of him continuing serving the nation while he has proved that he can’t take care of the national welfare under his watch,” said Mr Bimani.
So, he urged Mr Pinda to think of his future and make a hard decision now before political pressure starts to mount on him.
Mr Bimani said it was amazing that President Jakaya Kikwete has not sacked a number of ministers and other top public officials who have been implicated in the scandal which has rocked the nation.
The NCCR-Mageuzi deputy chairman (Zanzibar) Ambar Khamis Haji, insisted that if Mr Pinda respects principles of good governance he should resign immediately.
He said Mr Pinda might hesitate to resign because many MPs had defended him in the Parliament during the debate on escrow report but all the facts shows how that as a chief government activities supervisor, he failed to act accordingly and prevent the money from being stolen.
“Pinda has also been insisting that what was withdrawn from escrow account was not public money but it has been established that the account held public money,” he said.
