Chief Justice Mohammed Othman Chande yesterday failed to say what action would be taken against two judges linked to the controversial Tegeta Escrow Account scandal.
Justices Aloysius Mujuluzi and Prof Eudes Ruhangiza were accused of taking part in the scam, and the parliament advised the appointing authority to take disciplinary action against them.
However, at the anticipated press conference with the CJ yesterday in Dar es Salaam Justice Chande would not say anything.
President Jakaya Kikwete had said that he would not take any action against the judges, shelving that action to the CJ who is the head of the Judiciary in accordance with the separation of power of the three pillars of the state-Parliament, Government and the Judiciary.
When he met journalists yesterday Chande said he had nothing to say about the two members of the Judiciary. He told journalists that his press conference was about the forthcoming Law Week exhibitions slated for next Monday in the city. Retired President Ali Hassan Mwinyi is expected to preside over the event.
On the event, Justice Chande said for the first time, the day will involve a range of exhibitions from various stakeholders.
He said the purpose is to make the public aware of court proceedings and duties.
Participants in the exhibition will provide information on filing and running lawsuits.
The awareness programme is also planned on the newly adopted system of paying court charges, disputes through appropriate solutions, issuance of certificates among lawyers as well as provision of legal aid.
He said the weeklong exhibition will be marked by a peaceful demonstration that will be led by the former president Mwinyi.
He said the demonstration will start from the Kisutu Resident Magistrates Court, Ohio Street, Gymkhana, Obama Road, State House, Kivukoni Front, Sokoine Drive, Railway Street, Lumumba Street and Mkunguni Street to Mnazi Mmoja.
On plans to fast-track cases for the elderly, the CJ said the Judiciary was finalising the process to ensure that all old people’s cases are concluded quickly.
He said cases that will be given priority are those related to drugs, economic sabotage and public interest respectively.
