Dhaka. A steroid used for fattening cattle is proving hugely popular in Bangladesh's brothels to make young sex workers look older and plumper despite the dangerous side effects on their health.
British Charity Oxfam says an estimated 200,000 women and teenage girls work in Bangladesh's sex industry and as many as 90 percent of them may be addicted to Oradexon or similar steroids.
A 2010 AFP report cites the case of a Bangladeshi madam who gives her new ‘hires’ injections of high doses of Oradexon to fatten them up.
Brothel owner Rokeya, 50, told the French agency that the cattle steroids work best when injected by the 12 to 14 year olds working at her brothel.
For the more seasoned prostitutes, Oradexon tablets work wonders she said, though she was insistent that injections are "the quickest way to make a girl plump and hide her actual age if she is just a teenager.”
Doctors say long-term use can be fatal but at the vast, government-registered brothel 100 kilometres (60 miles) outside Dhaka, most of the 900 sex workers use Oradexon daily to give them plump, full bodies.
