On Friday a video clip was uploaded on a website by unknown individuals showing a guy disguised in black jacket and sun glasses, bragging to have either engineered or carried out attacks in some parts of the country, killing police officers and getting away with firearms.

The guy identified himself as Kaisi bin Abdullah. He says his group is preparing to carry out other attacks as it has enough stock of weapons to fulfill its mission.

In the video clip ‘bin Abdullah’ claims that the attacks they are planning to carry out would be in retaliation for apprehension and detention of their colleagues in various detention centres.

Of course the guy in the clip claims that all their colleagues arrested and detained belong to his religious faith.

Watching the video clip itself and the manner the guy disguised his face it reminds someone of what is going on in Syria and Nigeria where Islamic State (IS)  and Boko Haram members are fond of masks.

In the recent past, Tanzania has witnessed some acts of terrorism being committed in Zanzibar and in Arusha, killing a few individuals and injuring several others.

Such cases sent signals to the entire public and security organs that individuals with ill intentions think that striking is alright, no one will be safe.

Now, before the dust has settled, a video clip showing a person identifying himself as ‘bin Abdullah’ is uploaded, issuing threats not only to the police but   to leaders and the general public.

To make matters worse, reports that reached this newspaper yesterday stated that five Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) soldiers were injured yesterday as they   took on an armed group of unknown individuals at Ambon Caves in Tanga Region.

That these are criminals in a hideout was just plausible to an extent, though Tanga residents started talking about the group being a local expression of Al Shabaab.

Since the group has carried out numerous attacks in Kenya, widening their reach and even getting other cells of Al Qaeda sympathies to organize is almost predictable.

The police however are predictably cautious about labeling the threat as political or security matter that soon.

Critics however point out that the stream of events add up to something, as the frequent attacks on police stations, killing a few and taking arms, isn’t the sort of thing that bandits engage in too easily.

They prefer a civilian life and killing police officers isn’t how one masks a criminal event, as the police tend to work overnight to find those who harm their colleagues.

Seeking arms makes sense for groups that want war, as they don’t go for pistols firstly but submachine guns, rifles.  That’s why suspicions of Al Shabaab cells make sense, look credible.

At the same time there is a long litany of pressures especially in Zanzibar where agitation has been rising by the day with violent acts on individuals, and at a certain point last year, arrest and rather rough treatment of openly radical clerics united under the IS banners of Uamsho.

That obviously is an escalation of conflict as retaliation on terrorists gives them cause for more action, from acid throwing to more use of firearms. So there is nothing to be surprised if there are indeed cells of Al Shabaab, as so far they don’t have a local name.

It simply means that we shall have our hands a bit fuller in the fight against terrorism, and it is only fair to say that there are no easy answers on how it can be conducted. The other side, the terrorists, detest democracy and modern society. We must stand united against these emerging ruthless individuals.
