MANY Dar es Salaam residents are on Monday expected to pay their last respects to John Nyerere, the fourth child of Tanzania's first president and Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.John succumbed to diabetes on Saturday at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) where he had been admitted. He was 58.
Mr Charles Makongoro Nyerere, the fifth child in the family, said in Dar es Salaam that the body of the deceased will be transported to Mwanza on Tuesday, before being taken to Butiama Village in Mara Region.
“The requiem mass for the deceased will be held here (Mwalimu’s Msasani residence) tomorrow, after which last respects will be paid to the deceased’s body,” said Makongoro, who is also a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly.
John had served in the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) where he was jet fighter captain. He took part in the Kagera War between 1978 and 1979, which liberated Uganda from the brutal regime of Dictator Idi Amin Dada.Other sons of Mwalimu Nyerere are Andrew (first born), Magige (third), and Madaraka, while daughters are Anna (second) and Rose, who is the last born.
Meanwhile, MUGINI JACOB reports from Butiama that preparations for the burial of the late John have started at his Mwitongo home, close relatives of the deceased said.
The preparations have involved family members and the District Defence and Security Committee, according to Mr Peter Wanzagi Nyerere. “We are now at Mwitongo in Butiama organising the burial of our beloved brother.
The District Commissioner (DC) is also with us here along with members of the District Defence and Security Committee”, Mr Peter, who is also the councillor of Butiama ward and Vice-Chairman of Butiama District Council, told the ‘Daily News’.
“We expect the body to arrive here (Butiama) on Tuesday (tomorrow) while the burial will take place on Wednesday," Mr Peter, a close relative of the deceased, said.
Members of the Nyerere Family described the sudden death of John as shocking. “It is a big loss to us; the deceased is my brother and we have really lost an important person," said Faustine Wanzagi Nyerere.
Both Peter and Wanzagi are sons of a brother to Mwalimu.
