According to a media communiqué availed to The Guardian in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Makongoro, a member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), said he will announce his intention at Mwitongo village, Butiama District, Mara region.
Said he: “I, Charles Makongoro Nyerere, wish to inform esteemed members of the public that on June 1, 2015 at 10:00 am at Mwitongo, Butiama, Mara region, will tender my bid for the Union Republic of Tanzania presidency.”
Part of the statement he signed said he would be contesting under the ruling –Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) flag.
He expects to spend at least 120 minutes unveiling his journey to the State House. This was first occupied by his father as the first prime minister at independence in 1961 and later president of Tanzania.
He is the latest entrant in the race to the State House situated at Magogoni in Dar es Salaam.
He has been described by political analysts as ‘another spin’ in the ruling party’s political competition, especially for Edward Lowassa and Bernard Membe.
The latter two are being mentioned as potential contenders for the Union presidency under CCM’s ticket. Both have said they will tender their bid this week. Although Lowassa has come out as the most powerful CCM contender, Nyerere is equally powerful when it comes to political podiums.
