Isles House dissolved after shaky existence of govt national unity

ZANZIBAR President, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, has outlined achievements recorded for the country’s economic prosperity naming peace, unity and stability as pillars of a strong nation.

Addressing members of the House of Representatives on the last day of its constitutional existence, Dr Shein said all the people in Zanzibar including political leaders have a great role to play in maintaining peace and pave way for growth of democracy.

“A lot has been achieved in the last five years. This include implementation of over 90 per cent of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) manifesto focusing on improved welfare of civil servants, social welfare of the elderly, and Infrastructure,” he said.

He said both Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (AAKIA) in Unguja Island, Karume Airport in Pemba have been improved.

Dr Shein further said that Zanzibar’s main airport now handles larger airlines and that the construction of a new sea airport is underway by a Chinese company and a loan from EXIM Bank of China.

The president said connecting Zanzibar Islands to reliable electricity through the national grid was an achievement as the government seeks alternative sources of power and that people should feel happy that almost all towns and villages are connected to electricity. He said Zanzibaris should appreciate seeing that sea transport has been improving.

“We achieve a lot but also have a lot of challenges in the near future including ground for international trade fair, construction of new satellite cities in South Unguja, North Unguja and Pemba, construction of new tourists hotels and major renovation of government owned Bwawani Hotel,” he said.

The president said the government has been encouraging Public Private Partnership (PPP) in meeting its development goals and also boosting the production of cloves, while the government waits for completion of legal requirement to start oil and gas exploration in the near future.

Dr Shein said: “We are happy that the economy has been on track, with good collections of revenues and increase of establishment of light industries and fast growing tourism industry attributed to security, hospitality and advertisement of the Islands.”
