Lowassa returns documents, declares war against poverty

FORMER Prime Minister, Mr Edward Lowassa, has promised to intensify war against poverty through enhanced proper utilisation of available natural resources, if given chance to become the country’s next president.

Mr Lowassa made the remarks here on Wednesday afternoon when he submitted his union presidential nomination form.

He collected over 800,000 signatures after touring 31 regions in both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

Mr Lowassa added that poverty being faced by the public can be reduced through proper utilisation of resources, which he promised to ensure they benefit the majority of Tanzanians.

He also promised to address unemployment especially among youth and women, by ensuring availability of projects. He rated as baseless allegations being leveled against him that he is paying people to support him.

“How can I pay more than 800,000 to seek sponsorship, this is dirty game by people trying to paint a picture that I am spending a lot of money for the post, which is not the case,” he said.

He challenged people making such claims, he described as unfounded, to come out publicly with evidence to prove his involvement in such dirty deals.

“The bad thing is that they have no argument, so they have decided to create issues which are baseless. I want to use this occasion to tell people who have been accusing me of corruption, to stop immediately or submit proof of my involvement,” he said.

Adding that, “I am a very diligent person and once the party endorses me for the post, I will be firm against corruption without favouring or fearing anyone, as I will be leading by the rule of law.”

He said that time has come where people should stop mudslinging and gossip, pointing out that there is need for teamwork and concerted efforts towards nation building.

The aspirant was accompanied by eleven CCM regional chairpersons who fully support his move to be the next president. He was optimistic that with massive support he got in the initial stages, it is a good sign that there are good hopes ahead.

“I believe the support you offered me at this stage, will go on, as we go along in our road for presidency through the party meetings,” said the former premier.
