Kikwete on four-day state visit to Australia

President Jakaya Kikwete begins his Australia four day state visit today having left the country over the weekend.
 
In a statement from the Presidential Communication Unit , during the state tour, Kikwete is conducting a state tour at the Commonwealth of Australia following an invitation by the General Sir Peter Cosgrove who is also a retired Governor General for the Commonwealth of Australia
 
Kikwete, who in 2011 attended a Commonwealth meeting in Perth, will also visit several cities of Australia including Newcastle and Sydney.
 
After arriving in Canberra city today, Kikwete will plant a memorial tree at the Australia National Tree Garden and then visit the National Museum before meeting Tanzanians living in Australia.
 
On Tuesday, the president will hold talks with the Australia Prime Minister, Tony Abbot, meet the Australian Shadow minister for Defence Gai Brodtmann and then meet his host, Governor General Cosgrove, the former Chief of Defence Forces of Australia.Some of the issues expected to be discussed include a focus on minerals, education, training and vocational opportunities, the Indian Ocean Rim, security around the ocean, terrorism and security within the East African countries.
 
Kikwete will also use the opportunity to say goodbye and generally thank Australia, a country which has for five decades been cooperating with Tanzania in areas of economy, security, politics and community issues.
 
After his Tuesday visit to Sydney, Kikwete will on Wednesday arrive in Newcastle where he will be awarded degree of Doctors of Laws honoris causa – honorary LLD from the Newcastle University.
 
The Newcastle University is among the institutions which have been providing learning opportunities to Tanzanian students in accordance to a long time Australian policy to assist the country’s education sector.
 
At the moment, 45 students are still pursuing their education at the same university and according to the statement, at least 26 Tanzanians have already completed their learning at that university in areas of minerals, higher learning, journalism, finance issues and government management.
 
The President and his delegates are expected back home on Thursday morning.
