Wide variety of ZIFF awards included local productions

ORGANISERS of the just-ended Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) were pleased with the wide variety of films screened this year.

Their pleasure increased, at the closing ceremony on Saturday evening, when a host of prizes went to a variety of films from various corners of the world.

Commenting on the 2015 event, the Festival Director, Professor Martin Mhando said that the level of films this year had “surpassed” their “wildest” expectations.

He also referred to many members of the jury remarking on the high quality of the films screened.

During the ceremony, in which the symbolic dhow sail was brought down until next year’s episode, Mhando talked about African films, in particular this year, standing out for their increased production value, as well as innovative story telling quality.

“We at ZIFF have been thrilled to present such a varied and wonderful range of films this year,” Mhando told the ‘Daily News’. Apart from the actual awards the ceremony also included a solo performance on voice and guitar by the Bongo Flava singer, Elias Banabus a.k.a Banaba Classic.

He then went on to perform with a full band at the Mambo Club after the ceremony, on the other side of the Old Fort after the ceremony.

At this live show, which went on until early hours of the morning, there was also the Afro Jazz group and Christian Bella, who is currently based in the DRC and here.

The Silver Dhow went to a film made in Malta called “Simshar”, which was directed by Rebecca Cremona and selected “For its deep human content concerning the problem of African refugees in the Mediterranean area and connecting it with the local community of the island of Malta”.
