Ethics Secretariat challenged over unworthy candidates

THE Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) has challenged Public Leadership Ethics Secretariat to provide a list of public officials who are vying for political posts in this year’s general election who were once questioned on their values.

Furthermore, the Secretariat should not keep quiet on political leaders who failed to show high level of ethics during their tenure and still want to be given another opportunity.

This was said yesterday in Dar es Salaam by LHRC Executive Director, Dr Hellen Kijo Bisimba, when referring to the values of public officials towards election.

"We have witnessed some political parties giving another chance to those who were once charged of corruption,” said Dr Bisimba. She further said those leaders were once involved in the scandals such as corruption, abuse of public office and irresponsibility, actions that are contrary to the principles of the constitution.

Dr Bisimba said the law requires that a public leader should be a person with high level of morals as much as possible so that the public have faith and no doubt in their integrity.Expounding further, she said the Secretariat must reveal the names of public officials who have not provided information on assets they hold in accordance to the law.

The director said that Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) should be well equipped to play their role in accordance to Election Expenses Act, adding that irregularities which occurred during preferential polls should not repeat in campaigns.

About National Electoral Commission (NEC) to disclose the names of candidates who were accused of various scandals, she said the centre will not mention them as they are known by the general public.

However, she underscored NEC not to approve the names of the candidates nominated by various political parties who were once accused with corruption scandals, concentrated wealth and misuse of public office.
