Three fail to meet criteria as presidential hopefuls return form

THE National Electoral Commission (NEC) has endorsed eight presidential candidates out of eleven who returned their forms at the commission yesterday ahead of the campaigns, as three others failed to meet requirements.

Addressing journalists shortly after completion of the exercise to submit forms by the presidential hopefuls, NEC Chairman, Judge (rtd) Damian Lubuva, said that presidential candidates on DP, CCK and TADEA tickets failed to meet required criteria.

He said that thirteen presidential candidates from different political parties collected forms from the commission, twelve of the aspirants confirmed to return them yesterday.

The presidential candidates endorsed by the commission are Dr John Magufuli on CCM ticket, Mr Edward Lowasa (Chadema), Ms Anna Maghuwira (ACT-Wazalendo), Mr Fahmi Dovutwa (UPDP), Machmillan Lymo (TLP), Mr Hashim Rungwe (CHAUMA), Lutalosa Yembe (ADC) and Mr Janken Kasambala (NRA).

Speaking to reporters at NEC offices in Dar es Salaam yesterday, three aspirants who failed to meet the required criteria complained of unfair treatment by the commission over the process to collect sponsors and returning the forms. The candidates include Rev Christopher Mtikila (DP), Mr Godfrey Malisa (CCK) and Mr John Dunstan Lifachipaka (ADA-TADEA). Those who failed to submit the forms include Mr Miki Tasseni (CHAUSTA) and Mr Omary Sombi (AFP).

Rev Mtikila who arrived at the NEC offices at around 3:45 pm on a three-wheeled motorcycle (Bajaj), said NEC has failed to endorse him on grounds that he has failed to meet requirements, despite having collected the needed sponsors. According to NEC timetable, Rev Mtikila was scheduled to submit the forms at 3pm.

He was not accompanied by either his running mate or any other leader from his party. "I am not going to file any case over this but I will use the opportunity to inform and educate the public over the injustice by the commission in conducting the whole process of endorsing the right candidate," he said.

Rev Mtikila who expressed disappointment over failure to be approved, said he was still happy as he has been a high-quality public servant, stressing that he will not stop as his aim is to see Tanzanians get their rights.

"We are going to go around the whole country to campaign for our party (DP) as it is the only party with true and patriotic policy contrary to other political parties," he said, adding that despite his failure to run for the presidency, he is not ready to support any presidential candidate among those who have been endorsed.

"I only know of two presidential candidates (Dr John Magufuli and Edward Lowasa), the rest I have no idea or information about them," he said, pointing out that among those two he is familiar with, he does not see any to support as they are under political parties with poor policies towards better future of the citizens.

He noted that CCM has no true and patriotic policies meant to improve the welfare of Tanzanians, but has a long history for ruling the party. On the part of Chadema, Rev Mtikila said, "Chadema has no policy at all."

On his part, Mr Malisa of CCK vowed to file a case in court against the chairman of the commission and the Attorney General (AG), claiming that the process was unfairly conducted, marred by corruptions, among other things.

"There are political parties whose candidates never met even half of the criteria but have been endorsed, but we believe we met all the requirements yet we have been barred to run for the presidency," he said.

"We will not rest until we ensure the court rules in our favour," he said, adding that the party will go further and file in an international court if the high court fails them in its ruling.
