“I will work to protect the Union because it is of its kind in Africa…countries like Egypt, Senegal and Ghana attempted to follow our suit but failed. We must be proud of this Union,” he told the mammoth gathering amid cheers.
According to him, Zanzibar needs a President who can honour the 1964 Revolution and uphold the virtues inherited from the founding fathers of Tanzania. He said the Union has so far lasted for 51 years because it was protect by past leaders and the people.

He said the government was finalising talks with a Switzerland-based company, Shell, to enable it to undertake oil and gas exploration activities. Its initial exploration operations are expected to take between three and seven years, he said.
Dr Shein added that his government was finalising preparation of the oil and gas policy before its endorsement early next year.

The Head of State said the newly enacted oil and gas legislation assure Zanzibar autonomy in the management of the two natural resources.
He said Zanzibaris should elect Dr Shein because of his unquestionable patriotism, wisdom and tolerance qualities.
Retired Union President Benjamin Mkapa said he has confidence in Dr Shein’s leadership ability hence the people of Zanzibar should massively vote for him.
Vice President, Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal called on Zanzibaris to bury their differences and vote for all CCM aspirants. He said only CCM has the ability to protect the Union and guarantee development to them.
