Addressing the last campaign rally at Jangwani grounds in Dar es Salaam, Mr Lowassa said there is no pride in being poor and thus requested the electorate to vote for him to assume the highest office in the country to end deprivation.
"There is no pride or comfort in poverty. Our way of thinking must change. We (Tanzanians) live in a country heavily endowed with resources which must benefit all. We need a leader who can show the way.
I am the right candidate to untie Tanzania from poverty. I fear God and ready to serve the nation sensibly," Mr Lowassa explained. As for the philosophy behind well-regarded leadership, Mr Lowassa said a person in charge at the national level has to have a clear foresight and become fully aware of the obligation to show the way for a prosperous and democratic nation.
"If elected I will work diligently with my colleagues to make sure that our election manifesto is fully implemented for the country to realise high levels of economic success.
During election campaign rallies countrywide we learnt about challenges facing different social groups including the youth, women, the elderly, and teachers, among others. All will be addressed adequately under my leadership," he said.
Clarifying on the pace of development envisaged under his leadership, Mr Lowassa mentioned South Korea which according to him had similar level of economic strength with Tanzania 50 years ago but today is a leading powerhouse and listed among highly industrialised countries.
Speaking at the occasion, veteran politician Mr Kingunge Ngombale Mwiru defended his decision to defect to the opposition by insisting that the nation needs a different system of leadership far from the party that has been in power for five decades.
"I am not interested in any political position. For 61 years I remained a faithful member of the ruling CCM but now I have discovered that the party that I knew and served is no longer capable of even implementing development plans for the people.
Time for change is now," Mr Kingunge observed. National Chairman of Chadema, Mr Freeman Mbowe asked voters to turn up in huge numbers on election day (today), to exercise their constitutional right of voting for Ukawa candidates and reminded them of the need to abstain from acts of violence.
National Chairman of NCCR-Mageuzi, Mr James Mbatia warned against vote rigging and challenged the ruling party to concede defeat if Ukawa is voted in office.
