The complex is the latest housing asset being constructed by the National Housing Corporation (NHC). Its Director General, Nehemia Mchechu, disclosed this on Wednesday in the city.
He was speaking at an event where President Jakaya Kikwete laid the foundation stone of the 150bn/- project.
Mchechu said the project will have residential houses, offices, conference rooms, hotels, shopping malls and special parking lots for vehicles and helicopters.
“This housing project will have the capacity of accommodating 6,000 people at once and is expected to offer 24,750 job opportunities,” Mchechu said.
He explained that the project will make Tanzania have high-rise buildings like those in Dubai or Manhattan and is expected to lure many tourists from the world.
Manhattan is the most densely populated borough among the five of New York City. On the other hand, Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Msechu said already some of the spaces in the project have been booked by tenants.
For her part, the Chairperson of the NHC Board of Directors, Zakia Meghji, requested the government to amend laws that inhibit the NHC from selling its new houses to foreigners. Under the current situation aliens are not allowed to do so, she lamented.
For her part, the Chairperson of the NHC Board of Directors, Zakia Meghji, requested the government to amend laws that inhibit the NHC from selling its new houses to foreigners. Under the current situation aliens are not allowed to do so, she lamented.
She said according to the law, NHC houses can only be sold to Tanzanians but not foreigners. However, she went on to suggest: “There is need for expanding the market globally by allowing foreigners to buy houses from the NHC.
“Although current laws bar foreigners from buying the houses, there is need for them to open up opportunities so that those in the Diaspora are allowed to buy some houses.
This will boost NHC coffers as well as provide decent houses to Tanzanians.”
Meghji proposed that the road infrastructure in the Morocco Square should be improved. She suggested the construction of a flyover at the junction of Mwai Kibaki and Ali Hassan Mwinyi roads to allow customers get to the NHC facility easily.
She commended President Kikwete for boosting the state-run real estate company, which was not functioning properly in the past.
Responding, Kikwete concurred with the proposal that the NHC should also sell its houses to foreigners. He said the move would scale-up the country’s socio-economic development.
“This is a very good idea and we are taking the advice. We will work on it for the well-being of the corporation and the country at large,” Kikwete said.
He also commended the NHC board of directors for implementing the project, He said the building would be the largest in East and Central Africa.
“This is a very commendable effort for having such a giant project in Tanzania. This is going to completely change the outlook of Dar es Salaam,” he said.
