Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam the Bishop said the Zanzibar political crisis is a matter of concern not only for political figures but religious leaders as well and the whole country in general.
“The special prayer will involve citizens from different religions and political leaders from Zanzibar who will join hands to pray for peace,” he said.
Dr Gadi said there is need for the country to hold the prayers because as he put it ‘if the situation will continue to deteriorate in Zanzibar it will disrupt security for the whole country.’
He said, short of prayers, the crisis in Zanzibar might escalate and take the turn for the worst affecting national socio-economic development.
“We went to Zanzibar to make initial preparations including to get a permit from the police force and other government offices,” he said.
Before the October 25 election, Bishop Gadi organised another special prayer in Dar es Salaam at which the Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Said Meck Sadiki was in attendance. The political stand-off in Zanzibar started on October 28 after Zanzibar Electoral commission (ZEC) chairperson, Jecha Salum Jecha announced nullification of the October 25 General Election citing irregularities.
Various commentators have since said integrity of the Tanzanian General Election has been tainted but Jecha maintains that they cancelled the results due to widespread fraud.
He said new elections would have to take place, citing double-voting, cheating, and interference in the process by political parties.
