Zanzibaris will tomorrow mark the 52 Revolution Day in the absence of the Civic United Front (CUF) party which is part of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
As pressure mounts for authorities to address the political impasse, the secretary general, Seif Sharif Hamad who was the Presidential candidate under the party’s ticket had claimed victory before the polls were called off.
Hamad is expected to address the media in Dar es Salaam tomorrow on the party’s position on the stalemate after a series of talks that had been going on behind closed doors since December, last year.
The Foundation for Civil Societies (FCS) yesterday called upon the government leaders during tomorrow’s anniversary to tell the nation the status of the talks between the two sides; CCM and CUF.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam , member of FCS, National Coordinator of Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), Onesmo Olengurumwa said the Zanzibaris had the right to know about what had been discussed by the leaders whose intention was to seek harmony on current Zanzibar political situation. He said there was neither law nor any article of the Zanzibar Constitution of 1984 as amended in 2010 which empowers the chairperson or the Commissioner of Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) to cancel the election results.
“It is high time now for the leaders involved in the discussion to break the silence and come out together to give joint statement to their people who have the right to know the agenda of the meetings, and if there are answers,” he said.
He said the ongoing silence concerning the political situation creates questions and increasing anxiety among members of the public which might create conflicts.
Zanzibaris interviewed by The Guardian yesterday said the Island was passing through tough times both economically, psychologically and great anxiety since the Zanzibar Electoral Commission(ZEC) chairman Jecha Salim Jecha announced the nullification of the last year’s October 25 General Election.
